A view lets you filter items and people on the Search page and in the Items and People portlets.
In general, you use My Tags views and My Favorites views to "recover" items and people, and you the other types of views to "discover" items and people.

You must have the Add Tags capability to have a My Tags view. The tag lists in your My Tags view contains tags that you have applied to items and people. Note, however, that these tags may have also been applied to items and people by users other than yourself.
You can use My Tags views to:
Create "bookmarks" for documents that you access on both your work and home computers.
Maintain a changing record of items that are important to you.
The tag lists in your My Tags view contains tags that anyone has applied to items and people.
You can use Everyone's Tags views to:
Browse documents that have been submitted by your peers.
Gain an understanding of the concepts that are popular with users of your portal.
You must have the Add Favorites and Contacts capability to have a My Favorites view. My Favorites views let you browse only items that you have added to your Favorites list. No other user can access your Favorites list.
You can use My Favorites views to:
Store an item without having to search for it again.
Create a personal library of information that no other user can change.
To view all of your Favorites, choose the My Favorites view, then perform a search with a blank search query.
You must have the Add Favorites and Contacts capability to have a My Contacts view. My Contacts views let you browse only people who you have added to your Contacts list. Additionally, tag lists in My Contacts views only contain tags that have been applied to people in your Contacts list. No other users can access your Contacts list.
You can use My Contacts views to:
Organize and retrieve contact information for the people that you interact with regularly.
Find a subject matter expert and store their contact information. To find a subject matter expert on the Search page, create a search query describing the characteristics of the subject that you want to learn more about. After the search results appear, click the People tab. The people who have the most expertise on that subject appear at the top of the search results.
To view all of your Contacts, choose the My Contacts view, then perform a search with a blank search query.
You must have the Create Views capability to create a Custom View. Custom views are views that you can create that are windows into the My Tags views of one or more other people (members). When you use a Custom view, you can easily discover the documents and people that have been tagged by those members.
You can use Custom views to:
Have easy access to the constantly-changing set of documents that are used by your coworkers.
Gain an understanding of the concepts that are popular with your manager.

You must have the Prescribe Views capability to prescribe a view. Prescribed views are Custom views that you assign to one or more people (subscribers).
You can create Prescribed views to:
Provide the manager of a different department with easy access to the documents that are being used by your direct reports.
Provide your employees with a list of people whom you determine to be subject matter experts.
